Another working week is soon ending and the sun is currently shining (here at least). Here’s three old but golden albums for the week, all CD:s this time. Enjoy.
Gyllene Tider: Puls (utökad version, CD).
Remember Per Gessle in world famous Roxette? This is the band that started it all for him. When thinking of charming early 80’s Swedish pop, Gyllene Tider was everywhere with their first three albums. This is also a young Per Gessle at his best, before the global successes with Roxette. Gyllene Tider were also huge…in Sweden. Of the first three GT albums, Puls is the most sophisticated. Sound-wise more adult, if you want, than the two great and teenier pop albums before it. The mega hit Sommartider is included, still a given staple in Sweden’s summer soundtrack. The lyrics are more mature and the soundscape more melancolic, nostalgic and reflective. Gone are some of the somewhat naive double meanings from the first albums. This version comes with 11 bonus cuts, which makes it the CD version of choice.
När det gäller charmig svensk 80-talspop kunde Gyllene Tider inte göra mycket fel på bandets tre första album. Det ljudmässigt mest sofistikerade av dem är Puls, som inkluderar landsplågan Sommartider, en av sommarens givna megahits, år efter år. Men Puls innehåller mycket mera än så. Från inledande hjärtrytmen i (Hon Vill Ha) Puls avlöser poppärlorna varandra, även om de kanske inte alltid är hits, så är det mycket högklassig och välspelad pop. Dubbeltydigheterna från debuten är borta och ljudbilden mera uttalat poppig, med färre rock- och reggaeinfluenser. Vandrar i Ett Sommarregn och Flickan I En Cole Porter-Sång, (Gessles egen favorit) Jag Vänder Mig Om och Som Regn På En Akvarell är strålande. Vän Till En Vän och För Mycket Är Aldrig Nog är nästan lika bra. Uppmaningen i Lova Att Du Aldrig Glömmer Bort Mej, titeln på det vackra, vemodiga avslutningsspåret, är det lätt att svara jakande på. Nej, det gör vi inte. Det är ingen slump att Per Gessle gick vidare till att bli världsstjärna med Roxette. En osvikligt bred och god musiksmak som skickligt omsatts till strålande pop-hantverk. Den här upplagan kommer dessutom med inte mindre än elva bonusspår. Det första är livefavoriten Tylö Sun (Beach Boys i svensk tappning) som inte finns med på något originalalbum. Stämningsmässigt blir det ett kraftigt hack mellan den tänkta avslutningsballaden, som nu följs av det sprudlande trumspel som inleder Tylö Sun. Men det är kanske bäst så, att tydligt bryta stämningen till ett nytt avsnitt. Bonusspåren är en mera varierande kompott, men kul att ha många av dem samlade här, de som inte rymdes med, valdes bort, eller har varit placerade på samlingar och singlar. Idealiskt hade kanske varit att samla dem på en helt separat bonus-CD istället för i slutet på albums-CD, för att bevara albumets stämningsläge. Det är en smaksak.
Absolute Beginner: Flashnizm.(CD).
Absolute Beginner, aka Jan Delay, aka one part of Beginner, aka one half of La Boom, aka Eissfeldt. Great artist under many names. Here we have 73 mins of Hamburg hiphop, with Absolute Beginner, from 1996. That is 30 years ago, actually. Insane. Still, a somewhat unsteady but charming mix with some major highlights. McFly, obviously, Natural Born Chillas (featuring Lothar Meid) and the pumping grooves of Spacemadness and especially Rap Miles. Not everything on the album is equally good, but on these cuts Absolute Beginner really shines.
McFly (feat. Kastrierte Philosophen) is a driving and fiercely pumping hiphop cut, that has lost none of its coolness since 1996. Spacemadness and Rap Miles are sonically more typical products of their time, in a sort of charming way. Still very enjoyable, and spiced up with a distinct retro feel today. Even if the album is not a highlight in Herr Eissfedts discography, it’s still an interesting and ambitious early album. There is much to like here. And McFly will continue to figure in current playlists.
Kraftwerk: At The Circus - The Swedish Broadcast (2CD).
One of the best, perhaps the best, live recording I have heard with Kraftwerk. It is a radio broadcast from a live concert in Stockholm on Feb 10th 2004. Great sound, as is expected from a radio broadcast, and interesting setlist, including Expo 2000, and quite a few cuts from the Tour de France-album, as well as all the prime time classics and hits. Even the vocals in The Model is among the best I have heard on live cuts. Inspirational, amazing set by the elctro giants from Dusseldorf. Wish I had been there. Luckily, I’ve seen Kraftwerk twice live. This album sounds simply astonishing, from a strong start with The Man Machine all the way to classic concert-stopper Musique Non Stop. Kraftwerk sounds very inspired here, most versions are definitely up there with the best live recordings of Kraftwerk (at least outside the box sets). I definitely applaud that Expo 2000 is included, and we also get smashing versions of the minimalistic masterpiece The Model and mega-anthems The Robots, Trans-Europe Express and Computer World. Many cuts are in the setlist from the last ”real” album, Tour De France Soundtracks, including what might be their last masterpiece, Elektro Kardiogram, my favorite on the Tour-album. Still, nothing on that album beats the Francois Kevorkian-remix of original Tour De France (1983). That 12” is definitely worth checking out. Sound quality overall is great and the Stockholm performance can only be described as inspired. Approximately 2 hours of well-performed and -produced live renditions of some of the best and most inventive tracks ever made.
