Happy New Year / Gott Nytt År 2023!

Dear All,

Year 2022 ended bad, 

for the world with increased war-mongering, increased oppression against innocent civilians, a continued ruthless Russian war against Ukraina, and with the privatized power and electricity sector and many other greedy sharks getting filthy rich on everybody else’s increased costs for heating and living. The shame, the shame, the shame.

Personally 2022 ended with a bad flu (but luckily not covid, tested negative). 

And even the weather has been bad, dark and rainy, today. But better weather is expected for tomorrow.

And, let's all hope, for a dawn of a better year. 2023. 

Year 2023 just must be a better, fairer, more equal and free, democratic, climate-smarter, healthier, and much less greedy, year, than the year that we tonight are gladly leaving.

År 2022 slutar illa, med krigshets och ökat förtryck mot civila i världen, med ett fortsatt skamlöst ryskt anfallskrig mot Ukraina, och med att den privatiserade kraft- och el-bolagssektorn och andra giriga hajar skördar förmögenheter på alla andras ökade uppvärmnings- och levnadskostnader. Skammen, skammen, skammen.  

För mig slutade 2022 med en rejäl flunsa (men lyckligtvis inte covid, jag har testat negativt). 

Till och med vädret är sk-t i dag, mörkt, grått och regnigt. Men bättre väder väntas i morgon.

Och låt oss hoppas på en bättre gryning också för år 2023.

År 2023 bara måste bli ett bättre, rättvisare, mera jämlikt och jämställt och fritt, demokratiskt, klimat-smartare, friskare och hälsosammare, och mycket mindre girigt år, än det år vi i natt är glada att lämna bakom oss.

Men, år 2022 hade åtminstone en hel del fina ögonblick inom populärmusiken.

Best song 2022: 

Nie Wieder Krieg (No More War) by Tocotronic, on a wonderful album with the same title. Iconic. Majestic. Beautiful. And unfortunately so very current in 2022. A few other (well, around 10) favorite songs from 2022 are included in the New Year playlist you find below. 

Best Box Sets 2022:

The Flaming Lips: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (6 CD) (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition).

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots was Album of the year in 2002. Not only for me, but for most serious popular music critics. An instant classic. Now, 20 years on, The Flaming Lips published a great 6 CD-box set with a multitude of great music, the full classic album, two full major cd-singles, demos, non-album tracks, rarities, radio sessions, two full concerts, and even some more live stuff. Amazing! Plus a nice booklet and a small poster. The band has made many great albums and fantastic songs, but never surpassed the career high of Yoshimi. Six cd:s with material from that period is a music treasure. A must hear. And a given Best box set of the year (vinyl version will be out in 2023).

Die Toten Hosen: Alles Aus Liebe (4 LP)

The Vinyl box set of the year. Die Toten Hosen updated their 30-year anniversary box to their 40-year anniversary this year. Still going strong. Four great LP:s with both classics and newly remixed classics, and a few new versions. Great compilation of a great Punk Rock band, with some catchy Power-pop melodies and great ballads in-between. Not to forget that the limited box set comes with a signed card by the band members! And a great booklet. Superb bonuses to a superb box set.

Bästa album 2022 (utan inbördes ordning):

Waving The Guns: Am Käftig Rütteln (2LP)

Årets hiphop-album. Hörde dem första gången på skivtallriken i Hanseplatte i Sternschantze, Hamburg, i våras. Och det räckte med ett spår från Am Käftig Rütteln för ett direkt köpbeslut. Man Tut Was Man Kann (feat. Fatoni) och Coldplay & Nazis tillhör årets bästa spår. Waving The Guns svänger fett, och samhällskommenterar fränt. 

Jan Delay & Disko No. 1: Earth, Wind & Feiern - Live Aus Dem Hamburger Hafen (2LP+7")

Årets soul-pop-disco album. Grymt drag när Jan Delay och hans disco-orkester drar igång, live i hemstaden Hamburg. En riktig sommarpärla, som också ger vinterfesten sommarstämning. Eule, Oh Jonny... Alle tanzen!

Tocotronic: Nie Wieder Krieg (2 LP, 45 rpm).

Albumet med årets mest angelägna låt och albumstitel, Aldrig mera krig! Men Tocotronics senaste håller för hela slanten och inte bara ett singelspår. Helgjutet album med många höjdare och en fantastisk ljudbild, eftersom lp:n är utgiven som två plattor i 45-varvsversion. Starkt.

Joakim Berg: Jag Fortsätter Glömma (2LP)

Årets mest efterlängtade comeback. När Kents musikaliska hjärta Joakim Berg äntligen ger ut egen musik efter Kents avsked, är det något alla Kent-fans drömt om och längtat efter sedan 2016. Ett riktigt bra album, dessutom, som tar vid ungefär där Kent slutade, utan att alltför övertydligt låta Kentskt. Inledande Barn av vår tid är en av årets bästa låtar. Bara det. Berg kopplar greppet direkt.

Wolfgang Flür: Magazine 1 (LP)

Wolfgang Flür var en av de fyra klassiska medlemmarna i den legendariska uppsättningen av Kraftwerk, och den som har hållit lägst profil musikaliskt sedan dess. Magazine 1 ändrar det utgångsläget. Högpresterande Karl Bartos får ursäkta, men här är nog det bästa albumet med ny Kraftwerk-kopplad musik på flera år, med aktuella höjdare som angelägna Say No!, Zukunftsmusik och Billionaire. Ett album i tiden. Alla som längtat efter ny Kraftwerk-musik medan Ralf Hütter & co varit upptagna med oändliga nya versioner av gamla klassiker får här ett helt album som andas Kraftwerk, av en tidigare Kraftwerk-medlem. Kraftwerk-referenserna är särskilt närvarande i Night Drive, en 2020-talskusin till Trans-Europa Express och Autobahn, där några toner härmar Europe Endless. Utmärkt. Efterlängtat.

Die Fantastischen Vier: Für Immer 30 Jahre Live (3LP)

Det största hiphop-bandet i Tyskland firar 30 år med en trippel-live, inspelad i Köln inför en jublande arenapublik. Ett fint live-dokument över en strålande hiphop-kvartett. Underbara versioner av Krieger och Zusammen, för att bara nämna två. Har köpt några till av kvartettens klassiska album i år, och den här konsertinspelningen visar att de fortfarande är relevanta och i högform live.

Lars Winnerbäck: Själ och Hjärta Del (1)-2-3 (3x10").

Första delen utkom redan till julen 2021, därför inom parentes, men de två övriga tio-tummarna i trilogin utkom i år. Hela albumet finns även samlat på cd, men 10"-versionerna är förstås mycket coolare (och oerhört mycket dyrare, tyvärr). Har också ett limiterat, signerat exemplar av Del 1, ganska nice. Men: Del 3, med höjdare som tragiskt aktuella Skjutna stad (även om LW inte direkt kommenterar gängvåld och mord så fattar man ju poängen) och Släpp det där mörkret, är bäst, om man bara måste välja en tredjedel. Men 3x10”, tillsammans, är starkare.

Enjoyable Live Night: Sundström & Grillijono

In the normally dull city of Vaasa in the dullest period of the year, yesterday evening was a musical blast. Two surprisingly great gigs from two bands in form, performing in two different inner-city venues. Stefan Sundström med band at Ritz and Grillijono K.O. at Leipätehdas.

Sundström, a Swedish veteran musician, mostly well-known as a gifted singer-songwriter and solo performer, but also a rocker with a strong punk DIY-attitude, perform on this short Finland tour with a great five-person-band, including bass legend Nicke Ström. Yesterday, Sundström and his solid tour band gave a fine, pulsating rock concert, ending, perhaps surprisingly, with a well-performed, driving cover-version of Fri Sprit och Taxi Hem (Free booze and taxi home). A rather short concert, around 1 h 20 mins, but with no fill-outs, just great fun. A warm and energetic performance. I would certainly enjoy  a live album with this band.

Sundström performed so early that there was also good time to catch Punk band Grillijono K.O. at another venue, doing a quite rare performance in home town Vaasa. 

Grillijono has only made one album thus far, but a very fine one, and yesterday they also performed a great sample from a coming album. I certainly await that album, it is on the shopping list when published. The new song also went down well with the audience. As did the older songs, a favorite being Fuck Me Up Before You Go-Go. Energetic, fun, tempo-driven music and a high-toned main vocalist brings Offspring to mind. Yesterday was the first gig I have seen with Grillijono K.O., that are known nationally, but less so in their own, conservative home town. They are the next generation Klamydia, for a long time and still the most famous band from Vaasa. Both are punk bands singing in Finnish. Watch Grillijono K.O.!

Great gig, yesterday, I can’t understand why they are not a festival band here.

So,

A great night out enjoyning two bands in great form, in two different venues. I felt truly energized afterwards. About 5-10 people enjoyed both concerts, genre-hopping and proving that good music is good music irrespective of genre. Period.

Looking forward to see gigs by Stefan Sundström band and Grillijono K.O. again, soon.

End of an Era - Rest in Peace Queen Elizabeth II

Today U.K. and the world took a final farewell of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history and a constant in a turbulant and transforming world since the early 1950’s.

She has always been there, come rain or shine, for seven decades as Queen, and now she is gone. Having followed CNN and BBC from Queen Elizabeth’s death until now, her funeral day, it is evident that this has been the biggest news topic in the anglo-american world.

Queen Elizabeth leaves a strong legacy. She was the very long-serving head of the Commonwealth and is said to personally have met three million people during her long rein. She took her duties very seriously, but did not necessarily take herself seriously. She even surprised everybody participating in scenes with James Bond (Daniel Craig) and Paddington. So cool, so fun. 

Elizabeth has been such a highly loved monarch, which the masses of hundreds of thousands of mourning citizens is clear proof of. And 2000 guests participate in her funeral today including many heads of state, including presidents Niinistö, Biden and Macron, the monarchs of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Spain and Japan, and prime ministers of Australia, Canada, New Zealand. To name but a few. And about one million are expected on the London streets today to take a last farewell of the Queen.

A very beautiful and deeply touching burial ceremony.

The national anthem of U.K. is now, after 70 years, God Save The King.

An era is over.

End of Cottage Season 2022

Alas, another Summer is already gone. 

Formally.

This weekend End of Cottage Season was celebrated here in western Finland and smaller parts of eastern Sweden.

Weather played its part too. Friday was probably the last warm day of the year, plus 23 or more, sunny and full summer. Saturday, the End of Summer season celebration night, started fine, but from mid-day it started raining and it just continued, slowly, all night. Sunday had ok weather but clearly chillier, around 17 degrees. The first day of Fall, just as Friday was the last full day of Summer. And in between the End of Cottage Season celebrations on Saturday.

Timing is everything.

We chilled, and had real good food, but no party this year. But of course music was part of the celebrations, as always.

Villaavslutningen är firad, sommaren 2022 officiellt avslutad, och det är klart att vemodet infinner sig med höstmörkret. Minns de finaste, varmaste sommardagarna och -nätterna, och se framåt, hösten har också sina vackra, stämningsfulla stunder.

The party record of the year, not least for the summer season. Magnificent disco and dance grooves for the 2020’s. The title is an homage to Earth, Wind & Fire, of course. It’s party time, in German. Alle tanzen!

Waving The Guns: Am Käfig Rutteln

Tung hiphop med härligt drive. Starka texter och ett beat som får varje ben i kroppen att röra sig. Känn rytmen!

Great drive and beat in this wonderful hip hop record, that makes every bone in the body move to the rhythm.

Die Toten Hosen: Alles Aus Liebe 40 (4LP)

The German Punk legends have made many albums over the 40 years, including many live albums. Here is a celebratory box set with old classics, a few brand new songs and some great new mixes of old classics. Plus a handsigned card by all members of the band. The music is great, Toten Hosen are 40 but the music is Now. This may be the box set of the year, at lest for the first half of the year. Sensibly priced too, at 60+ euro, it is well worth buying and not overpriced like unfortunately so many other box sets are. Great box, Toten Hosen!

Prisvärd box av punkikonerna Die Toten Hosen, 4 lp och signerat kort, och många fina spår med klassiker, några nya låtar och ett antal fräscha remixar av gamla klassiker. Ett tungt, högklassigt paket av de 40-årsjubilerande veteranerna. Bästa boxen hittills i år.

The Finnish Summer is short. We are already past the brightest lightest summer nights of 2022 and nights are slowly getting duskier and soon darker.

Udopium (Live in Bremen - soon in Hamburg)

Den tyska nationalikonen Udo Lindenberg, 75, klarade corona-krisen och är som bäst ute på turne’ runt om i Tyskland. Inkommande vecka spelar han i hemstaden Hamburg, wish I was there, under pingsten stod Bremen på tur, fredag och lördag. Jag såg bägge spelningarna, fredag front  of stage, lördag på sittplats.

Två utmärkta konserter av en artist i god form, lite äldre än 2019, but still going strong. Det kan man däremot inte säga om personen som hade sittplatsen bredvid mig på lördagen. Han rörde inte en muskel under hela konserten och verkade mest längta hem. Hustrun, däremot, var ett Udo-fan.

På Udo var det full fart. Två konserter som i huvuddrag var lika, men med några små nyanser. Och ett publiktryck som var tyngre på lördagen. 

Höjdpunkter båda kvällarna var, föga överraskande, Das Leben och Reeperbahn, liksom anti-krigsblocket med Wozu sind Kriege da? och Wir siehen in die Frieden. Strålande. Stämningsfullt. 

Och snäppet vassare på lördag.

Det märktes att en del publik var äldre, och att några var gnälliga och kanske ovana med rockkonserter, personer som hellre borde ha stannat hemma. Den stillasittande på lördag verkade inte trivas särskilt bra, men störde ingen. En sur och otrevlig 65+ dam på fredagen, däremot, ansåg sig argsint ha rätt till minst 2 meters omkrets runt sig front of stage och buffade bort dem som kom för nära. Helt fel biljett för fel person, alltså. 

Bremen-publiken var inte en Hamburg-publik, förstås. Hemmaplan är alltid hemmaplan. Men det blev ändå riktigt bra drag bägge kvällarna och Udo & co levererade.

Det var väl inte samma enorma konsertupplevelse som 2019 i Hamburg, men två riktigt bra konserter, och bättre än väntat, 2022. Stentufft av Udo, nu 76. En del bandmedlemmar hade väl synbart åldrats lite under coronan, men det syntes inte i framträdandena. 

De filmiska inslagen på duken bakom bandet var delvis i bruk redan 2019, och till exempel konsertöppningen fungerar fortfarande utmärkt. 

Spellistan var långt en best of samling låtar, men så är ju turnetemat Udopium, efter samlingsboxen med samma namn. Med fanns också några nya, fina spår; från Udopium-boxen och ledmotivet till Udo-filmen. Mannen som gjorde tyskan till ett rockspråk gör fortfarande tyskspråkig rock som berör. Konserten kändes kort, fast den var en god bit över två timmar, ett utmärkt betyg. Favorit efter favorit radades upp på scenen och showen var ett uttryck för frisinnet i St. Pauli. Alla är välkomna, alla får plats.

Ändå finns här ett vemod, Udo är redan 76, och han gör stor turne efter en samlingsbox som sammanfattar hans långa karriär.

Hägrar slutet?

De nya spåren på Udopium visar att han fortfarande levererar nya, angelägna sånger. Och på scenen framförs också de nya sångerna i fina versioner. Udos texter, och musik, hans samhällsengagerade mellansnack, har relevans. Fortfarande. 

Kanske är det så att endel av fansen har åldrats mera under coronan än Udo. Två av dem i Bremen, i alla fall. 

Udo is still going strong.

The shortest night of the year is celebrated in the Nordic countries, not least here in Finland.

To celebrate this highpoint of the Nordic summer I prepared three playlists, one for each midsummer weekend days. The lists include songs sung in German, English, Finnish and Swedish, roughly in that order this weekend, from (very) different genres.

RIP Andy Fletcher

Andy Fletcher, founding member of Depeche Mode, passed away today (26.5).

He will be missed by all Depeche Mode fans. 

The remaining band members commented his death with great regret. 

”Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh or a cold pint.”

Kind words to be remembered by.

Fletch did not write songs, he did not sing them, and he wasn’t the greatest musician in the band, but he was a very important part of what made Depeche work. 

Depeche Mode is one of the greatest bands in the world. I have all their albums and live dvd:s, many singles and 12”:s, and have seen them three times live. Three great shows.

Andy Fletcher has always been present, ever since pre-Depeche band Composition of Sound. Now he is no more, and he will be sorely missed. 

Rest in Peace, Andy.

Stop the War!

We have been horrified, and more and more so for each passing day, by the war in Ukraine, the awful, inhumane brutalities committed by Putin’s Russia against civilians, even children and elderly, in the ongoing War. 

The shame, the shame, the shame…

As we celebrate Easter holiday, the awful, bloody war continues in Ukraine, without any signs of ending.

But even during these sinister times of Putin-initiated, and Russian war machine-executed, destruction of Ukraine cities and civil lives, there is the hope that someday also this War Hell will end. 

To quote the great Bruce Springsteen, and over 200 Belgian Musicians in the tribute video; 

Waiting' on a Sunny Day.

Samlade Verk på Svenska med Mando Diao är det bästa hittills (under januari) 2022. En härlig box med 4 cd, inklusive två utmärkta album och en mängd demo-versioner, versioner med symfoniorkester, b-sidor och (lite för lite) live. Snygga bilder i en inbunden box-bok. Suveränt vackra låtar med flera Gustaf Fröding-dikter, egna och andras texter, ljuvligt sjungna och framförda. Superb box.

Mando Diao are internationally celebrated for great songs in English like energetic Dance With Somebody or relevant He Can’t Control You. Here is the other side of Mando Diao, in Swedish, moving folk-pop versions of poems by Gustaf Fröding and other lyrics, beautifully performed and sung by Mando Diao. Already a contender for a place on the list Best of 2022. And certainly the very best published in January 2022. Samlade Verk på Svenska (Collected Works in Swedish) is a box set consisting of 4 cd’s in a beautiful hardcover box-book, including two great full albums and many demo-versions, versions with symphony orchester, single b-sides and (too few) live versions. Playlist för Välfärdsområdesvalet 2022

Först: 

I dag hålls ett avgörande val för Ditt Liv i Din Region just nu. 

Även om det finns en del praktiska besvär med just det här valet.

Valkampanjerna har inte handlat om  konkreta svar på sakfrågorna som avgörs i välfärdsområdena. Partiledarna talar rikspolitik, men det handlar om regionala val och framtidens vård för just Dig och Din Region. 

Kanske man borde tala om ett periferival, dessutom, eftersom Helsingfors står helt utanför.

Tämligen få finländare väntas tyvärr rösta, i detta, det kanske viktigaste valet av dem alla.

Efter decenniers diskussion och debatt väljer man att hålla valet:

a) under sämsta möjliga tidpunkt i fråga om covid-pandemins spridning

b) under sämsta möjliga tidpunkt vädermässigt, Finlands blixthala/iskalla januari 

c) och vid en tidpunkt då så gott som ingen medborgare haft tid och ork att koncentrera sig på vad en helt ny beslutsnivå på regional nivå egentligen kommer att innebära samtidigt som man försökt få socialt liv, arbetsliv, familjeliv och hälsa att fungera under en redan tvåårig katastrofalt omvälvande pandemi, och dessutom så nära jul- och nyårshelgerna.

Vems "briljanta" idé var det att hålla valet just nu? 

Det senaste riksdagsvalet flyttades fram, ändå var röstningssiffran mycket låg. Varför ordnas inte ett sådant här förstagångs-val i samband med ett annat val, då sakfrågor ock kandidaters ståndpunkter på riktigt hunnit diskuteras utförligt? 

Finland gör historia genom att introducera en helt ny regional nivå i det politiska beslutsfattandet, välfärdsområdet. Statsvetaren Claus Stolpe prognostiserade på Svenska Yle att valdeltagandet kan hamna en bit under 50 procent, t.o.m. så oroväckande lågt som 43 procent. Snart vet vi facit.  

Det är också knepigt om samma politiker sitter på alla politiska stolar och pallar i landet, nationellt, regionalt, lokalt, men så ser nomineringen ut. Risken är att vi får beslutsfattare som för olika nationella, regionala, lokala mål, samtidigt, i samma fråga. Snart får vi även det resultatet.

Det är de som väljs in nu som ska ta stora beslut också för Din Framtida Vård i Din Region.

De friska, välmående, starka, förmögna, välutbildade och välpositionerade brukar rösta.

Men de allra bäst positionerade, huvudstaden Helsingfors (och Åland), står utanför det här valet

Vilken tur, för den som är bosatt i Helsingors.

Valet är ”periferins” val. 

Det handlar om framtidens välfärd, eller bristen därpå, men bara utanför huvudstaden. Så ta de nationella valresultaten med en stor nypa salt. Kom ihåg att det här är Center-drömmen om en valreform.

Finland voted for the future of welfare and for a new regional political level today, except for the capital Helsinki and Aaland Islands. These regions do not participate in the election.

Good news for the inhabitants in Helsinki.

Who's brilliant idea was it to hold election in the middle of the worst pandemic situation, when cases are exploding and people are expected to just have contact with close relatives? 

It was possible to postpone the Parliament election last year, why not this super-important first-time regional election and combine it with a more well-known election? 

It has taken decades to plan a reform, so why organize the all-important first-time election at the worst possible moment, when voter knowledge and interests are affected by covid-pandemy, weather conditions, social, economic and psychological stress, and a clear lack of information about the election and the candidates in an election this close to Christmas and New Year holidays? 

Political scientists have predicted a low turnout overall, maybe even far less than 50 percent (Dr. Claus Stolpe didn't even rule out 43 percent on Svenska Yle). We will know the results very soon.

Finland makes history by introducing a new level of government. A low turnout is not the start that level would need. 

The capital Helsinki doesn't participate in the election at all, so it is in essence an election for ”peripheries”. Remember that "national" results do not include Helsinki.

The covid-19 crises continues in 22. And is getting worse, again, before it gets better. 

How many times will people have the strength to rise from falling back to square one again?

Omicron is obviously less lethal than earlier versions of the covid-virus, but instead, it is so much more contagious. 

Patience starts to run out. 

Possibilities to stay in business for many firms starts to run out. 

The physical and mental health of many, many people is on the brink of running out. 

Or have already run out.

Sad times. Sinister times.

But still, there is some hope in the tunnel. 

Omicron is so badly contagious that it can't be long before the numbers and levels are sinking. And as it is milder, and less lethal, the virus, hopefully, is soon turning into a virus that societies can live with, like influenza. 

But we are not there yet.

A third vaccine dose is needed to as many as possible, as soon as possible, please. Not to mention a first and a second.

The only way to beat this virus is to beat it globally. Richer countries urgently need to help poorer countries, to get vaccines too.

We are all in this together, 

all of us, everywhere,

remember that.

When I think of covid and popular music, not too many songs deal with the covid crises and our times, what we explicitly feel and experience in these sinister times. 

In a way, that's odd. 

But, 

older and "almost" contemporary  songs and lyrics can also be given a new and contemporary meaning, and fill some of the gaps left open. 

And naive songs may still remain naive, but sometimes also get an (originally) unintended current edge by current times. 

We may hear it, feel it, if we have imagination and open souls to notice it.

Ice rink pavements, lousy maintenance

Ice rink-pavement in central Vaasa.

Vi har gått från snömängder vi sällan upplevt, så mycket och så fort, till plusgrader och det värsta vinterväder som finns, ishalka på trottoarer och gator. Och isvädret har försvårats av Vasa stads underlåtenhet att sköta underhållet för gator och framför allt trottoarer och gathörn. Det finns förresten ett kvarter längs Korsholmsesplanaden där underhållet inte på åratal har skötts ordentligt, ingen skillnad om det är snö, regn, is, eller vad som helst. 

Men när snön nu har smält och förvandlats till is överallt är det helt oförklarligt att staden lämnar många trottoaravsnitt, bland annat övergångar på Handelsesplanaden, helt utan underhåll. Livsfarliga isbanor, som påminner mera om isrinkar än fotgängarzoner, dag efter dag, utan att någonting görs. Igår såg jag på avstånd en åldring med mycket stora svårigheter och stor risk för liv och lemmar ta sig över en huvudgata i Vasa. Med mycket tur tog hon sig småningom över, men alla kommer inte att ha samma tur om underhållet fortsätter så här. Och bilderna talar bättre än tusen ord.

Vansinnigt också att det ordnas välfärdsområdesval nu, när coronakrisens allra högsta incidental uppmätts och vädret och vägunderhållet (åtminstone i Vasa) dessutom försvårar för många äldre, sjuka, ensamma och svaga att rösta i valet... 

Vems "briljanta" idé var det att ordna ödesvalet i mitten av (en finländsk) januari, och dessutom mitt under värsta coronakris?

We have now gone from snow in quantities we have seldom, or never, experienced in so short time, to extremely icy and slippery surfaces, due to much snow melting away during warm (relatively speaking) days, and colder nights. 

This puts much pressure on the maintenance of streets and pavements. And, unfortunately, the level of maintenance in Vaasa is quite simply not up to standards. Even pavements when crossing a main esplanade like Handelsesplanaden/Kauppapuistikko are like ice rinks. Impossibly dangerous to cross for some days already, and still without one single grain of sand put out by the City's maintenance unit. Yesterday I saw at a distance an elderly women trying to cross, with enormous difficulty and with great risks for her safety, a major inner-city street in Vaasa. She was very lucky to make it over, everybody will not have the same luck. Especially if city maintenance continues to be handled this bad. Pics here say more than a thousand words. 

Shame on you, technical sector and City of Vaasa! 

It is also quite insane that regional-level welfare elections that decide the future health and social services are arranged at the same time as we have the highest levels of incidence during the whole covid-crises (and expected to rise) at the same time as Weather and road maintenance (at least in Vaasa) makes it extra difficult for elderly, sick, lonely and weak citizens to cast their votes...

Who's "brilliant" idea was it to arrange this fateful election in the middle of (Finnish) January and in the middle of the worst Covid- crises period?

Remembering Christmas Eve...

Tandläkarväder (Dentist-weather)

This is not a new song or clip, let's face it.

But Söndermarken is a great song, in a great live version. 

And I have always loved the fact that Lars Winnerbäck presented a completely new and genius word-construction in this long lyric.

First and foremost, Lars Winnerbäck's Söndermarken is a great ode to his childhood and hometown, Linköping. And about the longing to leave your limited childhood hometown.

It also makes me think of Kent's great quote from 747: "Ni kan skratta om ni vill/Håna oss/Vi rör oss/Ni står still". (You can laugh if you want/Mock us/We are moving/You stand still).

Winnerbäck's fantastic word about nasty weather describes the kind of grey, dull and sad weather that we all detest. Unpleasant like the sound of drills at the dentist's.

Yes, that says it all, really. Brilliant word.

Little Willie John

I was breathless, 

speachless.

Yes, I just found a wonderful-sounding clip on YouTube, 

the world's greatest tribute to Peter Le Marc.

Yes, that is also the (Swedish) title for the clip.

Världens största hyllning till Peter LeMarc.

An astonishing version of LeMarc's classic song Little Willie John.

A song that in itself is a touching, full, life story in a few short minutes. 

The tribute is arranged by Alliansveckan, which is said to be the world's largest roller-skate race, organized in Peter LeMarc's hometown Trollhättan. And the lyrics also namedrop Trollhättan places, like Stallbackas bilfabrik (Stallbacka car factory). So you could argue that it is his local childhood hometown community celebrating the town's (perhaps) most famous son. Young, old, and middle-aged, men and women and children, with or without disabilities, professionals and amateur musicians, representants of choirs, classic music, pop, rock, and genres in-between. I really don't know the back story, I just found the clip. 

However, one thing I find sad, and a little worrying, is that multicultural Sweden is not at all present here, or visibly represented in the videoclip. I don't think LeMarc's fan base is that mono-cultural, and Little Willie John, the artist in the song title, was a famous American r&b-singer. 

And it would have been nice with some female voices singing lead too.

Otherwise this clip show up some nice views of Trollhättan and great live energy on stage.

Stage here is the whole Nova arena in Trollhättan. 

And sound-wise, I really like the bigger-than-big-band joyful soundscape of a thousand singers and players. You can clearly see, hear and feel the passion among the participants.

Peter LeMarc is what Swedes call "folkkär". 

English hasn't a word for it, but the meaning is: Beloved by the people. And Peter is. 

And the people, at least the thousand or so present here, sang and played his song with great passion, together, celebrating a great (local-national) artist that writes beautiful songs with touching lyrics. Often with very everyday life and love topics.

Actually, I have met Peter LeMarc once in Helsinki, many years ago, for an interview. I showed him a 5/5 record review and we discussed his albums, music and lyrics, and when the pre-planned time was up he extended our meeting with another halv hour because he enjoyed the discussion.

Snowrich Year End/Year Start in Finland!

Christmas Eve 2021.

I really like Snow in Winter, let that be said. 

And it has been an early, snow-rich, long winter thus far, and we are only in the first half of January!

More snow that I can ever remember in one day, 44 cm new snow, on Christmas Eve, and some more snow and chill thereafter too. 

That's a really Snow-White Christmas.

Beautiful, very beautiful, but, let's face it, also way too much snow. 

It was chaos in traffic on Christmas Eve and Day. 

But the winter landscape was beautifully white and the air fresh (and cold).

Ironically I write this tonight, Jan. 13. When it is still +2 degrees outside. 

Today a lot of all that snow started melting away, and that made pavements and roads very slippery. 

So now we long for more snow again, a little more, not too much, though.

Snowy pavements and roads always beat icy ones. 

They are safer and so much nicer to walk on. 

Not to mention that new snow is both beautiful and clean.

This is what we say and convince us of, while waiting for sunnier days and the late spring.

And more cold and snow is expected. The coldest month, February, is still ahead.

However, there have been some sunny days too, and then it is very nice (and/or exotic) to walk by the frozen sea, with beautiful frozen views, at (the beautiful but way too early) sunset...

Hurriganes Live - 1982 & 1974

Legendariska Hurriganes var det hårdaste finska rockbandet på 1970-talet och levererade fortfarande i början av 1980-talet.

2021 var ett gott år för Hurriganes-fans med flera nya live-album från arkiven. Här nedan två av dem:

I vinter kom den första officiella utgivningen av livematerial under perioden med Janne Louhivuori på gitarr, remastrat av Louhivuori, en bra gitarrist som alltid stått i skuggan av Albert Järvinen och Ile Kallio.

Rockin’ Live 1982 visar att Hurriganes rockade rätt fett live även under den här perioden. Dessutom innehåller albumet liveversioner av några av 1980-talets bästa Hurriganes-låtar, som Bourbon Street, Cool It Down, Oh Rack och Helge’s Dream. Och en tidigare outgiven coverversion, Oh, Pretty Woman. Som namnet antyder ingår också några spår från då aktuella albumet Rockin’. De spåren lyfter bra. 

Albumet var i praktiken slutsålt på vinyl före utgivningen, bara genom förbeställningar. Jag var själv på reservlistan, hade turen att ändå få ett ex, som anlände precis före jul.

En hel del opolerad charm, men också rätt bra sound, särskilt med tanke på att källan är en c-kassettinspelning. Louhivuori har gjort ett mycket bra jobb med remastringen, och sköter gitarrspelet utmärkt på liveinspelningen.

Tidigare i år kom också dubbel-lp:n Live at Tavastia 1974, som är första albumsutgivningen av en live tv-inspelning med den klassiska trion Remu, Cisse, Abe. Inspelad på legendariska rock-klubben Tavastia i Helsingfors, bandets hemstad.

Inspelningsljudet är tv-bra, så no problems där. Trion river av tre LP-sidor med tungt, tidigt Hurriganes-sound. Albert Järvinen visar gång på gång sin klass som Finlands bästa rockgitarrist. Cisse Häkkinen var vid inspelningen sjuk i influensa, vilket tyvärr märks i en ganska svajig sånginsats, men tillsammans presterar de ändå en utmärkt energisk inspelning. Det taffliga mellansnacket stör emellanåt lyssningen, särskilt Remus pinsamma kommentarer före Hey Groupie kunde med fördel ha klippts bort. Sista sidan av dubbeln reserveras för en intervju med bandet, utförd av Mikko Alatalo. Ett ok tidsdokument, då livespåren ändå var för få för att fylla alla fyra sidorna. 

1974 var Hurriganes otroligt heta. Varför får man delvis svar på här.

Live at Tavastia 1974 är som helhet en efterlängtad utgivning på vinyl (och cd).

2021 was a great year for Hurriganes-fans, with many live-finds from the archives made available on albums for the first time. Here’s two fine examples:

Rockin’ Live 1982 is the first available live recording from the period with Janne Louhivuori as axeman. The third gifted guitarist in the Hurriganes story has also remastered the original c-cassette recording. The result is both fine and interesting. Some of laterday-Hurriganes’ best tracks are among the songs, as well as fine recordings of Roadrunner-era tracks. The vinyl version was sold out on pre-orders only.

Live at Tavastia 1974 is a double-album of a classic tv live show, recorded in legendary rock club Tavastia. Guitarist Albert Järvinen is in splendid form throughout. Unfortunately Cisse Häkkinen suffered from a bad cold and sadly that can be heard in his vocals, and Remu’s comments before Hey Groupie sound very dated and pitiful today and could have been erased. But otherwise, a fine recording of prime time Hurriganes. Three sides with energetic live material and one side with a band interview.

Klassiker, oh yeah.

Inspelad 1981 (en låt, Iron Horse, 1980) då originaltrion var som allra bäst.

Och nu låter det bättre än någonsin.

Live-klassikern är remastrad 2021. Vinylboxen inkluderar en hel spelning. Cd-boxen  innehåller tre hela konserter plus albumsklassikern. Det är himla mycket bra liveinspelningar med Motörhead som bäst. Men lite varning för priset på cd-boxen, 60+ euro. Musiken håller minsann pris/kvalitets-förhållandet mer än väl i skick, men själva boxen har sämsta möjliga system för att hålla skivorna på plats. Ja, det är så uselt att man bara kan utbrista: 

Totalt värdelöst, BMG.

Jag beställde en box, två av skivorna flöt runt i boxen för att systemet med tunna böjbara plastbitar som håller skivorna på plats var sönder. Boxen returnerades, ny box anlände, och även där var en av ”plastfjädrarna” sönder. Men skivorna var åtminstone ok.

Så, räkna med att cd-skivorna måste förvaras på annat sätt än i orginalboxen. Och det är helt enkelt inte good enough.

Musiken, däremot, utmärkt över 4 cd:n, med två spelningar i Newcastle och en i Leeds, utöver ett strålande livealbum. Det ger också lite perspektiv på livealbumet och valet av låtversioner. Musikmässigt håller boxen superb klass. Boysens tunga och frenetiska sound sparkar rumpa, hårt. Synd bara att skivbolaget så till den milda grad snålat på själva boxen och valt ”plastfjädrarna.

Lemmy, ”Fast” Eddie och ”Philthy Animal” var helt fenomenala live 1981. Mera behöver inte sägas.
